What do bee's use to make the exterior of their hives?

I think bees are primarily cavity dwellers. Wasps, however (in particular the bald faced hornet Dolichovespula maculata and the aerial yellowjacket Dolichovespula aerenaria) build the classic covered round aerial paper nests you find hanging from tree branches or snugged up under a house rafter. The wasps use thin strips of wood they peel from trees/posts/etc. that they soften with their saliva. They add this to the nest strip by strip until they've made those amazing paper structures. If you get a chance to look at one up close you can see the different colors of wood paper used to make the nest.What do bee's use to make the exterior of their hives?

They do not make the exteriors. They move into a hollow tree or any other structure where they can set up house.
the get the apariest to do it 4 them.....usually a standard size though some are dadents.....bees manufacture wax to keep honey and raise young......but yr right,,,the do make a sticky sap like liner called propolys or propalyss....not sur of spelling...but it waterproofs and isolates bacteria....and would be a liner if hives were not used.....there is a lot of different bee's unfortunately some of our native species have lost to pesticides.....some bee's only polinate certain flowers......some honey bees don't see red flowers....i wear red when bee keeping.....don't wear bear colors...or wear pigskin gloves....honey bee's see in a ultra violet spectum too...thats why the guards fly straiught for the forehead and eyes....they track you by breath and sweat oder....if you have squashed some while moving or checking hives..they tend to become more agressive on hot days.....check it out.....bee keeping is interesting....keep yr b vitas up....cheers
